Why can’t an orthodontist quote braces cost over the phone?

Five factors do most of the work.
Case complexity
Mild spacing or crowding is not the same job as a severe overjet, an impacted tooth, a crossbite, or a case requiring jaw surgery. Complexity drives both appointment count and total months in treatment.
Length of treatment
A longer case means more visits, more adjustments, and more chair time. This is the single biggest lever on the fee, and it is set by biology as much as by anything the office decides.
Patient age and growth
A growing child sometimes needs a two-phase plan — guiding growth first, then aligning teeth — which is priced differently from a single course of adult treatment. Adult bone does not remodel as quickly, which can lengthen treatment.
Appliance type
Traditional metal brackets are generally the most economical option in comprehensive orthodontics. Ceramic brackets, lingual braces placed behind the teeth, and clear aligners typically carry higher fees for the same correction. How much does insurance cover for braces in Michigan?
If your plan includes orthodontic benefits, it typically pays a percentage of the treatment fee up to a fixed lifetime maximum per covered person — one cap, not an annual allowance. That cap is usually what decides your out-of-pocket total on a comprehensive case.
Find three numbers before you sign anything
The orthodontic lifetime maximum, the coinsurance percentage, and the age limit. Many Michigan plans restrict orthodontic coverage to dependent children, which is what catches adult patients off guard. Confirm all three with your carrier or HR contact, in writing where possible.
Medicaid and MIChild
Michigan Medicaid and MIChild plans can cover orthodontic treatment for children whose cases meet the state’s medical-necessity criteria — a severity threshold scored from records, not a judgment about appearance. Approval is not automatic. If your child is on a state plan, say so at the exam so records are gathered with a submission in mind.

Mail-order aligner companies compete on price by removing the in-person exam, the X-rays, and the supervision. Bite problems that need bone or root evaluation cannot be diagnosed from photos, and orthodontic relapse or root damage is more expensive to fix than treatment would have been to do properly.
